I love this antique opal and diamond gold pendant/brooch. It boasts a central opal with red and green play of colour, within a diamond set serpent border, the head set with an old European diamond, weighing approx 0.50ct, the body set with smaller diamonds, total diamond weight approx 5.50 carats, assessed clarities I1-I2, assessed colours G-K, ruby set eyes, with a opal and diamond star bale, C clasp brooch fitting to reverse, length approx 48mm, unmarked probably 18ct gold, total gross weight approx18gms, suspended from a later yellow metal fine link chain, possibly 9ct gold, weight approx 3.5gms, in original leather bound fitted case £1000-1500

An agate ‘Gryllus’ brooch, comprising a late 16th early 17th century carved agate cameo, carved in the form of a Gryllus, possibly of Italian origin, depicting two classical male heads and a wild boar head, size aprox 17x20mm, within a later mount circa 1840s, within a decorative border and outer half pearl surround, length approx 29 x 25mm, later roller clasp and pin, unmarked yellow metal probably 18ct gold, £4000-5000
The gryllus, carved in agate stone, is a comic combination of animals or animal/human forms seen in Greco-Roman glyptic art, especially in intaglios, the mythical beast intended to scare away demons made out of a material believed to calm the wearer in this case agate. £4,000-5,000
