Formula 1 stars’ ear plugs coming up for auction

Silicone ear plugs worn by the world’s most famous Formula 1 racing drivers are coming up for sale at Hansons and must rate as some of the most unusual items ever consigned to auction.

The ear pieces, made to protect drivers from extreme noise levels, were worn by a host of famous names including Nigel Mansell, Jenson Button, Eddie Irvine, Michael Shumacher, Nelson Piquet, Damon Hill and Ayrton Senna.

The items are yet to be valued but are expected to spark major interest among F1 fans. In 2020, a steering wheel used by Ayrton Senna sold for £5,000 at Hansons.

Custom-made hearing protectors are essential in motorsport. They are manufactured from soft medical grade silicone and fitted with filters to reduce the effects of harmful wind noise associated with high speeds. The filters allow drivers to hear the engine note and warning signals but at a reduced level. The ear plugs are sculpted to fit snugly in the ear underneath a crash helmet.

Sports memorabilia is a booming sector and this highly unusual lot will be one to watch. If you have a sports related item to sell, arrange a free valuation by emailing [email protected].
