A man who has helped to conserve and restore paintings created by some of the world’s best-known artists is set to share his expertise in Stratford.
Haydn Roberts will be at The Malt House, The Rookery, Alveston, on Friday, October 25, from 1-4pm, to demonstrate the art of restoring and conserving oil paintings.
The event, organised by Hansons Auctioneers, also offers people an opportunity to have paintings valued.
Adrian Rathbone, associate director at Hansons, said: “People can bring along damaged oil paintings to be assessed by leading restorer Haydn. He will be demonstrating how to bring paintings back to life and I will be on hand to value them.”
Mr Roberts, a professional artist himself, has decades of experience. He worked in Fine Art conservation at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for many years and rose to become lead conservator for oil easel paintings.
He said: “I have worked on many extraordinary paintings by artists ranging from the Renaissance period, such as Giovanni Bellini, right through and up to modern day artists like Francis Bacon.
“I have also worked on paintings by French Impressionists, Constable, Turner and 19th century pre-Raphaelite artists such as Millais, Rosetti and Holman Hunt.”
Hansons is currently gathering paintings for its December Fine Art Auction and, if you have something of interest at home, you could be surprised by its value.
In Hansons’ October Fine Art Auction several paintings exceeded expectations including lot 1051, a painting by Flemish artist Bonaventura Peeters (1614-1652). His oil painting of a Dutch Man of War and sailing boats off a coastal town sold for £19,000 from an estimate of £3,000-£5,000.
Another picture to impress was lot 1089, a male facial study for the Sorbonne fresco, dated 1901, by French artist Pascal Adolphe Jean Dagnan-Bouveret (1852-1929). It sold for £17,000 from an estimate of £1,000-£1,200.
Mr Rathbone said: “Our Fine Art auctions often produce incredible results for our clients so, if you have a painting you feel may be of value, do bring it along for assessment.
“I will also be happy to value general antiques and collectables as well as watches, jewellery and silver.”
