Our Mid 20th Century Design Auction takes place on Tuesday, November 5 at Bishton Hall, Wolseley Bridge, Staffordshire, and here James Harris, who is leading the sale, picks out five of his favourite items.
Lalique Magic From Roaring 20s
Glassware by Rene Lalique (1860-1945, Paris) is always sought after and this Bacchantes vase in grey smoked glass is a particularly stunning example. Designed in 1927, it features dancing nymphs and is embossed with the signature R.Lalique. It comes with its original bronze cast light base. It’s in good condition and comes with provenance. Estimate £4,000-£6,000.
Tantalising Tea Set Trio
This Susie Cooper cubist tea set trio also dates back to the 1920s and offers an ultra stylish way to enjoy your afternoon tea. It includes a teapot, milk jug and sugar and each item bears a Grays pottery back stamp. Regarding its condition, there have been no repairs, but there has been loss of paintwork on the teapot, particularly to the base. Estimate £1,000-£1,500.
Clarice Cliff Colour Cheer
I put it down to the soft but bright colours but Clarice Cliff pottery always lifts my spirit. This 1930s lotus single-handled jug features a tulip pattern, pale green band, tree and flowers awash with different hues. It’s had no repairs, important fopr a collectors, but there are some small areas of paint loss. Estimate £250-£350.
Art Nouveau Beauty
Items classed as decorative arts speak of their time and that is certainly the case with this striking early 20th century Art Nouveau Bohemian Turn-Teplitz Amphora vase. It features a beautiful maiden wearing a jewelled crown and basks in gilt and mottled blue and green ground detail. Estimate £400-£600.
Gentle Bronze to Delight
Hungarian sculptor Andor Ruff (1885-1951) created this early 20th century miniature bronze female nude. The gentle figure, arm raised, is awash with elegance. It is signed by Ruff on the base. There is no damage or repairs. Estimate £150-£250.
