Hansons is keen to unearth buried treasure for its August Historica/Metal Detecting Finds auction and has experts on hand to guide you if you have an object to assess.
Mark Becher, a man with decades of metal detecting experience and expertise, is head of Hansons Auctioneers’ Historica Department.
He said: “I’ve had a keen interest in archaeology and metal detecting for more than 25 years. As a result, I’ve built up extensive knowledge of metal detecting finds.
“This has been gained through many hours spent identifying, photographing and recording finds in the field and by working closely with some of the Portable Antiquities Scheme’s Finds Liaison Officers.”
For the last 10 years, Mark has run The Metal Detectives Group from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. He also organises detectival events.
Supporting Mark in his work is Chris Wright, who will be offering free valuations at Hansons' Derbyshire saleroom from June.
He said: "I've had a passion for history and antiquities for as long as I can remember. This started as a child on family walks in the countryside. I'd pick up little oddities from ploughed soil along the way.
"After being given my first metal detector at the age of 12, I managed to amass a small collection of washers, milk bottle tops and the odd ha’penny."
However, after much time spent enjoying his new-found hobby, Chris hung up his detector and boots until he entered his late 20s.
"I have now been a serious detectorist for more than 10 years with a passion for all things British, but particularly Iron Age and Saxon coins and artefacts," said Chris.
"Though I feel I'm always two steps behind the person making that special find, I've developed an eye for rare or unusual artefacts likely to appeal to collectors."
Chris is supporting the Hansons' team as a Historica consultant and is looking forward to seeing finds at valuation events.
Chris Wright can value ancient objects and metal detecting finds at Hansons, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire, DE65 6LS, from 9am-11am on the following dates: June 15, July 20, August 3, September 21, October 19, November 16.
Entries are invited until August 9 for Hansons' August 27 Historica Auction.
