Bids sky-rocketed into another galaxy when an elegant 19th century brass telescope came up for auction at Hansons Auctioneers.
The telescope, tripod stand and lenses in original pine case together with a miniature boxed telescope, sold for £5,400 from an estimate of £80-£100 on February 19 at the firm’s Derbyshire saleroom.
Four phone bidders battled against keen interest from the internet to secure the item, which was in good condition.
Charles Hanson said: “We knew this item was destined to reach for the stars as we had so much interest in it before the sale.
“It’s a stunning, showpiece object beautifully made and built to last. I can understand why our bidders were so impressed. I am also delighted to secure a significant sum for our vendors.”
Hansons offers free valuations at its salerooms in Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire, and at the Normansfield Theatre, Teddington, London. To find out more, call 01283 733988.
