Antiques experts are heading to Rugby in July in a bid to unearth finds that could earn people a summer windfall.

Valuers from Hansons Auctioneers will be at a new free event at The George, 2 The Green, Bilton, on July 16, from 2-4pm, in the first of a series of free valuation events.

On hand to advise will be Hansons’ associate director Adrian Rathbone who said: “I’m very much looking forward to meeting the people of Rugby. It would be wonderful if we discovered our next big find at this venue.

“Every week, we find impressive objects at antiques valuations events just like this one. For example, in Hansons’ June Decorative Arts auction a plate found at a free event smashed its estimate of £400-£600 to sell for £1,300.

“That’s because it was a René Lalique plate. Lalique was a highly regarded French glass designer who lived from 1860 to 1945. The Ondines pattern plate, with a beautiful blue opalescent colour, dated back to 1921. The owner had no idea it was of any great value. It was discovered among a box of dinner plates.

“Another valuation day find was a Christopher Dresser toast rack which sold for £2,000. Glasgow-born Christopher Dresser was ahead of his time. His toast rack, designed in 1878, looks so contemporary it is still produced today. Consequently, his work is highly sought after.

“Another June sale highlight was a Dunhill Aquarium lighter, which sold for £2,600 – yet another free valuation day find uncovered in the Midlands.”

Hansons’ experts can value all kinds or portable antiques and collectables, along with paintings, jewellery, silver and watches.

They will be The George, 2 The Green, Bilton, Rugby, CV22 7LY, on July 16, from 2-4pm and also on August 20, October 15 and November 19. Items can be entered into future auctions at Hansons Auctioneers, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire. To find out more, email [email protected] or call 07802 839915.
