Could the next big antiques find be made in STAFFORD? Free valuations on July 25

Sitting on a summer windfall, forgotten treasures or something you’ve always thought just might be worth something?

Well, you can find out this month thanks to a popular annual antiques valuation event which is set to return to St Bede’s Preparatory School, Bishton Hall, Wolseley Bridge, near Stafford, on Wednesday July 25, from 2-5pm. Valuations are free but donations are invited to aid the school.

The organisers, Hansons Auctioneers, hope it will reap rich rewards for the people of Staffordshire after a year of ‘unexpected windfall finds’ across the Midlands at valuation events just like this one.

Hansons’ Associate Director and Fine Art expert Adrian Rathbone, who will be at the event at St Bede’s, said: “We have had some amazing finds this year, such as a Christopher Dresser toast rack which made £2,000 in our June Decorative Arts auction.

“The work of Christopher Dresser, a designer born in Glasgow in 1834, was so modern the toast rack we found, an original 1878 design, is still being manufactured today. It was bought by newlyweds in the 1930s when the contents of an old vicarage went up for sale.

“Then there was the beautiful Dunhill Aquarium lighter which sold for £2,600 from an estimate of £300-£500 and a Rene Lalique plate, plucked from the back of a box of plates, which made £1,300 from an estimate of £400-£600.

“Wonderful items like this not only take us by surprise, they delight their owners who enjoy an unexpected windfall thanks to something that may well have been sitting in a cupboard for decades.

“A great St Bede’s find was a collection of antique Chinese snuff bottles which sold for more than £15,000 at Hansons.

“Bishton Hall is a stunning location and I am looking forward to uncovering treasures, helping the school and meeting the people of Staffordshire.

“They can bring along any items of interest which may be of value and, if they wish, consign to auction on the day. I will be delighted to advise on antiques, paintings, silver, watches, ceramics, antiquarian books and collectables.

“Take a look around your home, check through those bags and boxes tucked away in corners and who knows what may be revealed.”
